What exactly is a sworn translation?
A sworn translation is an official translation performed by a sworn translator-interpreter, appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. It has legal validity and is used in official procedures, such as studies, certificates, immigration documents, court proceedings or notarial procedures, among many others.
The sworn translation must include (and if it does not reach you in this way, you must request it from the translator) the following:
- The complete translated text.
- A declaration of fidelity signed by the translator.
- Stamp and signature of the sworn translator.
- Place and date of issue.

3. Who can do a sworn translation?

4. Can I receive the sworn translation by email?
Yes, since 2020, electronic delivery with digital signature of the sworn translator is allowed, as long as the document contains all the required elements (declaration, signature, seal and registration number).
Even so, some agencies still request the printed version, so it is best to check with the agency beforehand or, failing that, always ask for the printed version with handwritten signature.
How long does it take and how much does it cost?
It will depend on the type of document, its length and the source and target language. As a guideline:
- Time: between 2 and 3 working days for short documents. If you need it in less time, you may have to assume the cost of urgency.
- Price: from 25-30€ per very simple document. Translators usually charge per word and the amount will vary depending on the source and target language.
Prices are not officially regulated, so they may vary according to the professional.
6. Is it valid outside Spain?
A sworn translation made in Spain is valid throughout the national territory.
Abroad, acceptance will depend on the receiving country. In some cases it is accepted directly, and in others it is required:
- Hague Apostille of the original document.
- Additional legalization.
- Sworn translation made in the country of destination.
It is recommended that you consult with the foreign institution before ordering the translation to let your translator know your exact needs.
7. What kind of document do I need to send to the translator?
The translator can translate directly from a file you send him/her, either by email or even by Whatsapp. In any case, the text document must be 100% legible because, if it is not, the translator will have to include in his translation annotations such as [text not legible] or [best possible version]. So that you do not face any problems with the institution to whom you will submit the translation, make sure that the translator receives a document from you that is legible.
8. Does the sworn translation expire?
No, the sworn translation does not expire. However, the original document may have limited validity (for example, medical or criminal record certificates). Therefore, you will usually be asked to provide a translation of an updated document.
9. Can I translate my own documents?
No. Even if you have knowledge of the language, if you are not accredited as a sworn translator, your translation will not be legally valid. Only a certified sworn translator can sign and stamp an official translation.
